A Game theoretic model for generation capacity adequacy: Comparison between investment incentive mechanisms in electricity markets

چکیده
In this paper we study the problem of long-term capacity adequacy in electricity markets. We implement a dynamic model in which firms compete for investment and electricity production under imperfect Cournot competition. The main aim of this work is to compare three investment incentive mechanisms: reliability options, forward capacity market and capacity payments. Apart from the oligopoly case, we also analyze collusion and monopoly cases. Dynamic programming is used to deal with the stochastic environment of the market and mixed complementarity problem and variational inequality formulations are employed to find a solution to the game. The main finding of this study is that market-based mechanisms would be the most cost-efficient mechanism for assuring long-term system capacity adequacy. Moreover, generators would exert market power when introducing capacity payments. Finally, compared with a Cournot oligopoly, collusion and monopolistic situations lead to more installed capacities with marketbased mechanisms and increase consumers’ payments. doi: 10.5547/ISSN0195-6574-EJ-Vol32-No4-6

A Game Theoretic Approach for Sustainable Power Systems Planning in Transition
Intensified industrialization in developing countries has recently resulted in huge electric power demand growth; however, electricity generation in these countries is still heavily reliant on inefficient and traditional non-renewable technologies. In this paper, we develop an integrated game-theoretic model for effective power systems planning thorough balancing between supply and demand for e...
متن کاملModelling of power generation investment incentives under uncertainty in liberalised electricity markets
In this paper we discuss the problem of power generation capacity adequacy in restructured and competitive power systems and analyse potential regulatory mechanisms to ensure sufficient supply of electricity. In particular, we look at how uncertainty influences the optimal timing of investments in new power generation capacity. We formulate the power generation investment problem for a decentra...
متن کاملGeneration Investment and Capacity Adequacy in Electricity Markets
One of the major challenges in restructured power systems is to maintain a level of generation capacity that ensures an acceptable level of certainty against power interruptions. A power market with a wellfunctioning spot market and long-term markets for allocation of risks between consumers and producers should in theory generate optimal investments in new power generation capacity, but this m...

Investments in technology create a large amount of capital investments by major companies. Assessing such investment projects is identified as critical to the efficient assignment of resources. Viewing investment projects as real options, this paper expands a method for assessing technology investment decisions in the linkage existence of uncertainty and competition. It combines the game-theore...
متن کاملSecurity-Based Co-Expansion Planning of Gas and Electricity Networks Considering Demand Response
Coordinated expansion planning of power plants has always attracted the attention of power industry planners to arrive at the optimal mix that assures adequacy of energy supply. Here, we model the coordinates for expansion of electricity and gas networks while considering technical constraints, in order to minimize the total cost of investment and operation of electricity and gas networks for a...
